Trump and Free Speech

This is a beautiful analysis of how an author and a poet thinks of free speech and a politician who is too direct in his words and now, deeds. The Man Booker prize winner for 2016 Paul Beatty is an American poet and author. His book “The Sellout” is a complex yet sarcastic novel. The US is not known for too many authors of American origin winning internationally. He comments on the British, saying “some people there were upset as I won the prize. But you never own anything truly. People must understand it. Even if you feel so, it may be someone else’s!”. Instead of trying to be an author, one must try to be an honest author. The rest just happens. He is perhaps happy that the sales of e-books are going down (a Nielsen report indicates a 16% drop in 2016!).

A Kindle cannot give you the “tangibility” that a real book can. [Internet versus the Real] Regarding Trump – Paul Beatty says he will keep writing what he wants to irrespective of who is in power. He says that even under Hitler, people wrote books. Maybe books promoting Fascism  J Paul feels that Trump has embraced his own rhetoric. It is not important who the ruler is, an author has to keep writing. An author’s voice is important, they must continue expressing themselves. Trump may not be the first person to speak in too direct a way. There are many who think that way. Even the Philippines President Duterte also does. Trump has not invented this “awful discourse”, it’s always been there. Accountability too is an issue. What about the financial crisis? Was Wall Street held accountable? What about the Iraq war?
