  1. A weak democratic state opens the floodgates : Use of non-state actors and proxies against its neighbours is not a new phenomenon in Pakistan’s politics. In fact, the political leadership in Pakistan has always has always been weak and controlled by the military leadership on the one hand and the religious fundamentalists on the other.
  2. Not an ideal neighbour : Ever since its formation as an independent state in 1947, Pakistan has engaged itself more in disruptive activities in both of its neighbouring states of India and Afghanistan. Pakistan’s borders have almost always remained disturbed. As a consequence, the economic development of the country has lagged far behind India.
  3. Terror Groups in Pakistan : Many internationally recognized terror groups exist in Pakistan like the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) etc. Various international powers have been using Pakistan for their own interests in the region, and Pakistan has been receiving huge financial assistance from them.
  4. Trump goes all out : US President Donald Trump has time and again reiterated his resolve to eliminate Islamic terrorism. The recent US attacks on Syria and Afghanistan were in line with this objective. Trump had also warned Pakistan.
  5. No more strategic patience please! On a day when the Trump administration announced that it was going to abandon the era of strategic patience practiced by the previous government, the US National Security Advisor (NSA) H R McMAster arrived in Islamabad to tell Pakistan to stop using terrorism to pursue its goals.
  6. National Security, advised! The US NSA told Pakistan in no uncertain terms that they have been hoping that the Pak leaders would understand that it is in their interest to go after the militant groups less selectively than they have been doing for far too long, and the best way to pursue their interests in Afghanistan and elsewhere is through diplomacy and not through use of proxies that engage in violence.
  7. Little changes : McMaster’s message is no different from what previous US administrations have conveyed to Pakistan – with little effect. It is time for some big action, otherwise it’s purely symbolic.
