The Shahirs in Maharashtra spread their sentiments through poetry and music, and not violence. A great idea.
Drumming up the voice
Social and political awakening through peaceful means like music and street theatre is not new. Ancient India witnessed this centuries ago. Particularly, Maharashtra has always had a rich heritage of folk culture and traditions being used for spreading social and political awareness among masses. The best part has been that the entire activity is done peacefully through folk music and street theatre. The state of Maharashtra has produced numerous Shahirs (street poets) who have dedicated themselves to the cause of social upliftment through their art. In a society full of violence, it is good to see that the new generation in Maharashtra is once again turning to these methods of social awakening instead of the violent means of arms. This also indicates the revival of our traditional folk art, which otherwise seems to be dying. The government should try to utilize this talent to spread awareness about social evils instead of labeling them as Naxalites or anti-social. That would do a lot of good to the society.

भारत में संगीत, कविता और सड़क नाट्य जैसे शांतिपूर्ण माध्यमों से सामाजिक और राजनीतिक प्रबोधन का कार्य कोई नई बात नहीं है। प्राचीन भारत ने सदियों पूर्व से ही इसका अनुभव किया था। विशेष रूप से महाराष्ट्र में हमेशा से ही लोक संस्कृति और परंपराओं की सामाजिक और राजनीतिक जन-जागृति के लिए उपयोग की एक समृद्ध विरासत रही है। इसकी सबसे अच्छी विशेषता यह है कि यह संपूर्ण गतिविधि लोक संगीत और लोक नाट्य जैसे शांतिपूर्ण माध्यमों से की जाती है। महाराष्ट्र राज्य में ऐसे असंख्य शाहिर (लोक कवि) हुए हैं जिन्होनें अपनी कला और जीवन को जन-जागृति और सामाजिक उत्थान के कार्य को समर्पित किया था। हिंसा से परिपूर्ण आज के समाज में यह देखकर अच्छा लगता है कि महाराष्ट्र की नई पीढ़ी सामाजिक जाग्रति के लिए हिंसा और हथियार-बंद विरोध के रास्तों की बजाय इन शांतिपूर्ण मार्गों की ओर मुडती दिखाई देती है। यह हमारी खोती जा रही पारंपरिक लोककला के पुनरुज्जीवन का भी संकेत है। सरकार को इन्हें नक्सलवादी या असामाजिक कहने के बजाय इस प्रतिभा का उपयोग सामाजिक बुराइयों के प्रति जागरूकता प्रसारित करने के लिए करना चाहिए। इससे समाज का काफी लाभ होगा।
