Governance, Raj Dharma, Spirituality

When Krishna spoke to the trembling Arjun on the battlefield, he reminded him of his “Dharma” – the righteous course of action as per his station in life. The word Dharma includes the concepts and ideas of morality, ethics, spirituality, duty and responsibility.  Watch a detailed lecture on Hinduism to go deeper into this concept. Spirituality should not be construed in a limited religious sense but it needs to be a part of our life, and should also be reflected through all actions of governance. Real spiritual people are always active, dynamic and action-oriented. Purushartha or action-oriented efforts are critical to our success in the long-term. Spirituality provides the inner strength to perform better than the ordinary.
There are four aspects of spirituality – Dharma, spiritual good; Artha, material well-being; and Kama, worldly desires and Moksha, enlightenment. One should try and balance the first three in his life, but it should be done on the foundation of spirituality. Spirituality is a state of awareness, a state being with oneself. Desires can be fulfilled in a right manner. One should be aware of his limitations – Maryada. Anything done spiritually, keeping in mind maryada, will always end up in good. An interesting fact – The original draft of the Indian constitution had many beautiful images from Hindu and ancient Indian traditions, which vanished in the subsequent reprints of the document.
