- 5G and IOT : There are numerous studies that try to quantify and predict the impact of Fifth Generation (5G) telecom networks and the Internet of Things. It is evident that 5G will inspire innovation across many industries, resulting in new technology applications like IOT as a part of the economy and our lives.
- Internet of Things (IoT) : It is the interconnection via internet of computer devices embedded in everyday objects enabling them to send and receive data. This can automate most of the day-to-day tasks for people and homes, leaving quality time at our disposal. At least, that’s the promise!
- The evolution of mobile generations: (1) First generation (1G) was all about voice, (2) Second generation (2G) was about voice and texting, (3) Third generation (3G) was about voice, texting and data, (4) Fourth generation (4G) was an enhancement of the 3G speed, (5) 5G is expected to be even faster.
- IOT demands 5G : The full potential of IOT can be realized by 5G, which will be commercially available by 2020. Ericsson AB’s latest Mobility Report indicates that there would be 550 million 5G subscribers by 2022 and Asia Pacific region will be the second fastest growing region with 10% subscribers.

- Not only about speed : 5G would be much more than just the speed. Its unique combination of high-speed connectivity, very low latency and universal coverage will support smart vehicles and transport infrastructure which would make flow of traffic smooth. It would also enable us to control more devices remotely like heavy machinery in hazardous environments and surgery.
- Remote medical care : Surveys of decision-makers from multiple industries indicated that 73% of the healthcare executives surveyed expect that next generation mobile networks would allow them to implement new services and products for improving life of people. Remote medical care would become a reality.
- Business models to upgrade : Moving towards 5G, operators will have to transform their business models to connect and manage increasing number of vehicles, machinery sensors and consumer electronics. In the next five years IOT revenue will also come from service enablement platforms, apps and services, along with connectivity.
- New services : IOT presents opportunity for both operators and industries for innovations. Success factors will be the ability to speedily launch new services.
