The Oval Office has started witnessing a sharp turn in events. Far from the expectation that Trump would mellow down during and post-inauguration, he seems keen to carry out his promises. Social impact – Trump has alienated many Muslims and African-Americans by his insulting remarks. He needs to bridge the chasm if meaningful progress is to be achieved. Huge women’s rallies were witnessed recently.
Healthcare – He is undoing the benefits of Obamacare calling it “too costly for many”. Media – He has called leading channels and newspapers “fake media” and “hollow journalism”. The relation have soured badly even after the inauguration when the “low numbers” in ceremony were reported. Intelligence – He has openly criticized the American intelligence agencies over allegations that Russia may have manipulated the elections in some way. Though his first stop after taking charge was to the CIA to ‘show trust’. Companies and Jobs – He has openly pulled up many companies (GM, Nissan, Carrier and Lockheed Martin) for sending jobs overseas. Tighter visa regime can badly hurt Indian IT companies. Indian IT à $150 b total revenues, 75% from exports, 60% of it from only US (all figures approximate). They are precariously placed. Free Trade – He has openly questioned the global free trade system, and threatened “punitive import duties” and by limiting market access. China will be badly affected, and that can have strategic and military consequences if he really challenge the “One China” policy that Beijing cannot let go of, for fear of huge loss of face. Global Institutions – He has criticized the UN as being a useless club, the NATO as outdated, the EU has ready for implosion, the US Allies as not paying their dues, the NAFTA as benefitting Mexico. That’s a long list. Global Deals – The TPP is dead. He may call into question the Paris Agreement on climate change, and the US – Iran nuclear deal. That will create great disruption as well. But if he befriends Russia, ISIS will get a serious challenge. A strong alliance of US – India – Australia – Japan – S. Korea may emerge, to keep China in check.
