  1. Turkey and India : Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived on a two-day official visit to India. This is his first foreign visit after the controversial April 16 referendum, which he won by a slender margin. President Erdogan last visited India in 2008 as Turkey's Prime Minister. During his meeting with Indian leaders including the President, the Prime Minister and other leaders, both countries are expected to discuss bilateral issues including security, terrorism and trade cooperation. 2. NSG and MTCR : India's membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) will be the top agenda for the meeting between Erdogan Modi. Turkey has made it clear that it does not have any objection to India becoming a member of the NSG. Turkey had earlier supported India's membership in the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).
  3. Turkey and Cyprus, and India! The Turkish President's visit immediately comes after Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades' tour to India. The northern part of Cyprus has been under Turkish occupation since 1974. India shares friendly relations with both Cyprus and Turkey. Here is a look at the Greece-Turkey-Cyprus conflict and its various dimensions.
  4. Terror issues : The other issue which has been a sore point is Fethullah Gulen. After a failed coup in July last year to topple President Erdogan, Turkey had blamed Fethullah Gulen Terrorist Organisation (FETO) and said the outfit has infiltrated India.
  5. Deep Dive : More on Turkey-related issues, here
  6. Turkey, Pakistan, India : His visit comes at a time when the tension between India and Pakistan is intensified. Turkey has also a close friendship with Pakistan, and Erdogan in a visit to Pak had asked for the Kashmir problem to be solved as per the will of the Kashmiri people. After landing in India, he made a controversial comment on the Kashmir issue saying ‘we should not allow more casualties to occur in Kashmir, and suggested a multi-lateral dialogue to resolve the Kashmir issue. This obviously is most unacceptable to India.
  7. The Kurdish question : The Kurdish–Turkish conflict is an armed conflict between Kurdish insurgent groups and Turkey. The Kurds want an independent Kurdistan, or to have autonomy. The main rebel group is the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Turkish military carries out frequent ground incursions and air and artillery strikes in the Kurds’ region.
  8. No Wikipedia please! It is interesting to note that Turkey (Erdogan) has banned Wikipedia recently. So much for free speech J
  9. Stemming the immigrant crisis : To the credit of Erdogan, he helped stem the crisis in 2015 and 16. Turkey embraced millions of Syrians and Iraqis fleeing from their countries due to ongoing violence. But relations with Europe (Turkey was to become an EU member) have frayed, and Turkey has drawn closer to Russia.
