India and Australia have deepened their relations through a range of agreements and tieups. The futures does look bright.
India-Australia relations – a long journey

- Aussie PM comes calling : Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is on his first state visit to India. Both nations share cordial and cooperative relations. He met his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi during which both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the conclusion of a commercially-meaningful Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), which addresses the priorities of both sides.
- Range of MoUs : The two countries signed six MoUs in various fields: (1) Cooperation in combating international terrorism and transnational organized crime, (2) cooperation in the field of health and medicine, (3) cooperation in sports, (4) cooperation in the field of environment, climate and wildlife, (5) promotion and development of cooperation in civil aviation security, and (6) implementing arrangements on cooperation in space technology.
- RCEP hanging fire : The two countries expressed keenness to secure a timely conclusion of a high-quality Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and felt that RCEP can provide a boost to regional economic confidence in a time of global uncertainty.
- Research together : Both leaders inaugurated the TERI-DEAKIN Research Centre on Nano and Bio Technology, an example of the kind of cutting-edge science and technology cooperation that is happening between the two countries. The Australia-India Research Fund of nearly $100 million has focused on collaborative research projects in the areas such as nano-technology, smart cities, infrastructure, and agriculture and disease control.

- Uranium exports to India : Australia is keen to export uranium to India, though it will be without a formal agreement for some time. The Australian Prime Minister welcomed India’s membership to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), and assured Australia’s strong support for India’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. Australia also expressed its support for India’s membership of the Australia Group and the Wassenaar Arrangement.
- Southeast Asia : India and Australia have an increased engagement in ASEAN and the ongoing cooperation in other regional bodies such as the ASEAN Regional Forum, and ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+), and the Asia Europe Meeting. Mr. Turnbull also reaffirmed support for India’s membership of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC).
- Jobs and investments : The two countries agreed to develop on the strengths of each other to create jobs and investments. The important role of people-to-people links was stressed upon, especially of the Indian origin community in Australia. Both leaders stressed upon the progress in the growing knowledge partnership between Australia and India, building on the strong links in higher education, skills development and science, technology and innovation. An increasing number of Australians are coming to India to study, including under the New Colombo Plan.
